Certified Medical Administrative Assistant FAQ1. What is the CMAA?
The Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) is a nationally recognized certification for Medical Administrative Assistants. It demonstrates your ability to perform routine administrative tasks in a physicians’ office or clinic to keep it running efficiently. Medical Administrative Assistants are also known as Medical Office Secretaries and Medical Office Assistants.

2. Do I have to become certified?

Certification is not required to enter medical administrative assistant industry. That being said, certification looks great on a resume and may help employers have more confidence in your skills. It proves that you have the training they are looking for and you will only require minimal additional training.

3. Why should I take the CMAA?
Becoming nationally certified may increase the number of job opportunities, make you eligible for a higher pay scale, and validate your training and expertise.

4. How much does it cost?
The CMAA is only offered through the National Health Career Association (NHA). They administer their tests at testing centers throughout the U.S. The current price to take it is $105. You can register for it at www.nhanow.com.

5. Where can I take the CMAA Exam?
The NHA uses PSI Testing Centers to administer the CMAA exam. You can find the nearest testing center location at https://candidate.psiexams.com/.

6. What does it cover?
The CMAA covers Working as a Medical Administrative Assistant, Healthcare Structure and Organization, Medical Law and Ethics, Healthcare Documentation, Exploring Healthcare Reimbursement, Medical Office Procedures, Medical Office Management, and Practice Finances.

7. Do I need additional study material?
The Career Step Medical Administrative Assistant course prepares students very well for this exam.  Most students are able to pass it on their first attempt without additional study material. If you are worried about the test and would like to purchase additional material, ATI Allied Health offers an online study guide and practice test. You can find more information at http://www.atialliedhealth.com/ati_store/category.aspx?zcid=163.

8. What is the format of the CMAA Exam?
The final exam consists of 110 multiple choice questions. Testing candidates are allowed one hour and fifty minutes to take the exam. The basic breakdown of the exam is 20 items covering risk management, 30 items covering financial procedures, and 50 items covering office procedures.

9. How is the CMAA Exam scored?
The questions in the exam are weighted, meaning some questions are worth more points than others. You must score 390 or better to pass the exam.

Even though certification may not be required, it’s a great way to prove your skills to employers as you’re looking for medical administrative assistant jobs. Prepare for your CMAA exam with Career Step’s Medical Administrative Assistant with EHR training program. Call us now for more details!

Do I have to take coursework before taking the cmaa test? Or can I just sign up for it?

  2. Career Step January 09, 2015

    Hi Alissa,

The National Healthcareer Association would be the best source to check with for definitive answers since they offer the exam, but we don’t believe coursework is required before taking registering for the exam.

However, the CMAA exam covers Working as a Medical Administrative Assistant, Healthcare Structure and Organization, Medical Law and Ethics, Healthcare Documentation, Exploring Healthcare Reimbursement, Medical Office Procedures, Medical Office Management, and Practice Finances, so you will want to make sure you have a thorough understanding of all those topics before registering.

Career Step’s program covers all of those things and can be completed in as little as just 3 months. For more information on our training, please visit http://www.careerstep.com/medical-administrative-assistant-with-ehr-career.

    Best wishes!

  3. Teresa January 21, 2015

I’m getting ready to take the CMAA next week and have obtained the NHA Study Guide. My question is for those who have taken the test, is the test pretty much pulled from their study guide? Didn’t notice any terminology on the test and I didn’t want to waste time studying it if it was not needed and I could devote that time to just studying what is in the study guide.

  4. Career Step January 28, 2015

    Hi Kimberly,

If you’re just looking for information on taking the CMAA exam, your best bet is to check out the National Heatlhcareer Association’s website (they’re the ones who actually offer the exam). You can find CMAA specific information at http://www.nhanow.com/medical-admin-assistant.aspx.

If you’d like training before taking the exam, our Medical Administrative Assistant with EHR program is a great choice. You’ll graduate with all the knowledge and skills you need to earn the CMAA certification. You can find more information about this program at http://www.careerstep.com/medical-administrative-assistant-with-ehr-career or contact an Academic Advisor who can provide more information and answer all of your questions at 1-800-411-7073.

  8. yessenia February 20, 2015

Hi. I graduated from medical assistant in 2010. I want to know if its to late for me to take the test to be certified? If I still can where can I study to prepare me for the test? Thanks

  9. Career Step February 23, 2015

    Hi Yessenia,

The Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam does not have any previous education requirements, so you should be able to take it without any problem. You can find more information, including links to available study materials on the National Healthcareer Association’s website: http://www.nhanow.com/medical-admin-assistant.aspx.

  10. Ashley March 17, 2015

Hey I was wanting to know is there a limit of times you can take the test if you fail? I am going next Monday and I am super nervous.

  12. Michele Long March 23, 2015

Hi. I’m taking the CMAA test on Friday the 27th!  I’m a nervous wreck. I used the study guide and took the five tests and scored 80%. I did not study medical terminology and am wondering if I should.

I plan on passing the test, however, do you have to pay $105 to retake it.  Please answer ASAP

  13. Career Step March 24, 2015

    Hi Michele,

As far as we know there is not a free retake offer and you would need to pay an additional $105 to take it. However, you should definitely confirm that with the National Healthcareers Association, which offers the exam. You can find their information at http://www.nhanow.com/medical-admin-assistant.aspx.

Best of luck on your exam Friday!

  14. Latashi April 18, 2015

Hi!  I am scheduled to take the CCMA test in May. I just took the pretest through atialliedhealth.com. I was wondering is the pretest test similar to the real test that I’ll be taking in May?

  15. Career Step April 20, 2015

    Hi Latashi,

Unfortunately we’re unfamiliar with the content of that pretest and cannot offer any guidance on the level of preparation it provides. =(

You may have better luck by contacting atalliedhealth.com directly.

Best of luck taking the exam!

  16. Breanna Reinemann May 12, 2015

  17. Career Step May 12, 2015

    Hi Breanna,

    Best wishes!

I have worked in the medical field for 11yrs and I was wondering to sit for the cmaa exam, do I have to go to a program for Certified medical administrative assistants or can I simply sit for the exam?

  19. MEME May 22, 2015

I am planning to take the CMAA exam after I finish coursework. Is it not necessary to have work experience before I take exam? I want to make sure for that.

  20. Ashley May 24, 2015

I just completed my coursework through Career Step for CMAA and CEHR. Do I have to take both certifications at one time? Or is it two separate occasions?

  21. Career Step May 26, 2015

    Hi Meme,

As far as we know, the National Healthcareer Association has no experience or education requirements for the CMAA exam. You can find more information and contact details for them on their site: http://www.nhanow.com/medical-admin-assistant.aspx.

Best of luck on the exam!

  22. Career Step May 26, 2015

    Hi Ashley,

You would take the two exams separately. More information on registering for each exam can be found on the National Healthcareer Association’s site. CMAA details are here: http://www.nhanow.com/medical-admin-assistant.aspx and CEHRS details are here: http://www.nhanow.com/health-record.aspx.

    Best wishes!

    Hi April!
The best study resource is the official study guide published by the NHA. Many Grads have given this feedback after taking the exam.
    Good luck!

  26. Instructor Craig Laursen June 04, 2015

I recommend a good couple of weeks of study from the official study guide. It is available on the NHAs website - NHAnow.com

  28. Instructor Craig Laursen June 12, 2015

    Hi Sharon,
You can purchase the official study guide through the NHA at nhanow.com. I have heard a lot of good feedback about the study guide from Graduates who have taken the CMAA.

  30. Vickie Lawrence June 26, 2015

I would like to pursue my CMAA. I received a diploma in Medical Administrative Assisting over 20 years ago and have been working in healthcare since then. What requirements are there to take the CMAA and what material can I use to prepare for the certification. I welcome any help or suggestions.

    Thank you.

  31. Instructor Craig Laursen June 29, 2015

    Hi Vickie,

You can check out the requirements to take the exam at NHAnow.com. With your background you shouldn’t have any problem sitting for the test.

For test prep I would recommend purchasing the official study guide from the NHA. I’ve received some really great feedback from students that have used the study guide as their primary test prep resource.

    Good luck!

  37. Natalia August 22, 2015

Hi, I am currently CCMA and about to take my CMAA this week. I’m interested on getting the CEHRS but I’m not sure if I need to go back to school or can I just take the test. Any advise will help. Thank you.

  38. Instructor Craig Laursen August 24, 2015

    Hi Natalia,
The CMAA and CEHRS have a lot of overlapping competencies. I would recommend at least purchasing the CEHRS study guide and comparing the NHA’s detailed test plans for the two exams. Your comparison should give you a good idea of what areas you would need further study before sitting for the CEHRS.

  39. jessica August 28, 2015

I payed to take the certification test 1 year ago,but did not take it due to my job requiring me not to be certified. I am now starting a new job that does require us to be certified. Do I need to re pay for this test??

  40. Graduate Support August 31, 2015

What examination did you set up? I would contact the organization you purchased the test with. They would be able to let you know the policy they have set up.

Once again, we would recommend you calling the organization you set up the certification with.

  48. Nunu October 14, 2015

I have a question I am currently in college getting my degree in Medical Office Administration is this the same thing if I take the test like is Medical Administration assistant the same thing as Medical Office Administration is my question. If so could I still take this test I have a criminal background and I want all the education I can get to show I am a good person and trying to turn my life around and become something in life. So I was wondering will my A.S. be just fine or could I add this on by taking the exam. Is this the same thing or different like if I am getting my degree would I not need to take this?

  49. Instructor Craig Laursen October 21, 2015

Getting a degree is a great accomplishment. Getting certified is just another way to show employers you are knowledgeable and well trained for the field. You will want to show both your education (no matter how you obtained it) and your certification on your resume. Our Medical Administrative Assistant online course is not for a degree, but focused on the material needed to pass the CMAA. If your coursework for the A.S. is similar, then you will be ok to take the exam.
I would suggest looking at NHAnow.com to see their requirements to take the test and look into official study materials. We have had many grads tell us the study guide is very helpful.
    Good luck!

  50. Tamara Stark October 22, 2015

  52. Instructor Craig Laursen October 27, 2015

Tamara - Yes, you can take the test where you live now. The CMAA is the same nationwide.
    Good luck!

  53. Instructor Craig Laursen October 27, 2015

    Hi Shakeeta,
Not sure what you mean by “certification book” but I would recommend getting the official CMAA study guide. It is available through NHAnow.com.

  58. Kaci January 03, 2016

Does this site offer colleges that offer the cmaa exam or are accredited so that I would be eligible to take it? Also, do you have to have an associates to take the exam or would a certificate suffice?

  61. Mangi January 09, 2016

Hi, I have signed up the CMAA test with NHA/ psi. I wanted to if the practice test offered through ATI are similar to the actual test?

  62. Instructor Craig Laursen January 12, 2016

    Hi Mangi,

Yes, they are similar to the types of questions you will see on the exam. They are definitely not the same questions, but they will cover the same topics.
I have had some great feedback from grads about both the study guide and the practice tests.
    Best of luck!

  64. Instructor Craig Laursen February 16, 2016

  65. Shweta February 18, 2016

I recently passed my CMAA exam and was wondering what grade I received? What exactly does the 390 represent? I scored well over 400 but not sure what that’s equivalent to.? Is there a way to know what your numbers exact score is? Thank You.

    Hi Denise,

Career Step does not administer, grade, or have scores for the CMAA exam. It is administered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). You will need to contact them directly for more information on your score. You can find their information at http://www.nhanow.com/.

    Best wishes!

  68. Trish March 31, 2016

Im a single mom tired of working in an industry I hate..before I register, what is the realistic pay scale of a CMAA with no prior medical experience.  I know I can do it, I am passionate about all things medical.  I want to make sure we can survive on the income in California.

    Thank you.

  69. Craig Laursen April 04, 2016

    Hi Trish,
The nationwide average for MAA’s is $34.000 right now. That is based on the latest info from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
    Have a great day!

  70. Ryan B April 22, 2016

There is going to be a CMAA Exam administered on May 13. Is this the only day that I can take it since that is the only date available on the application? Also, if it became impossible to take the exam on that date because I will be out of state, is it possible to take it from there, maybe at some PSI center nearby?

  71. Graduates April 26, 2016

    Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your question. The CMAA examinations are giving throughout the year. The dates listed will be the times you are able to take the test. You can take the test at any location throughout the country no matter where you are. If you will be out of your state, you can check the locations in the area you will be.

    Best wishes!

  72. Gina flores June 16, 2016

How long is the CMAA valid?

  73. Career Step June 22, 2016

    Hi Gina,
Thank you for your question! The CMAA is a 2 year certification and has to be renewed by taking 10 CEUs and paying a fee every 2 years. Hope this helps!

  85. Savannah October 07, 2016

I am wondering if I take a class to get my medical administration assistant diploma, is there jobs out there that would hire you with just that, until I have the money to take the (CCMA) and get certified. Thanks.

  86. Career Step October 10, 2016

    Hi Savannah,
That’s a great question! Certification is not required to enter medical administrative assistant industry. However, becoming nationally certified may increase the number of job opportunities, make you eligible for a higher pay scale, and validate your training and expertise.

Take a look at indeed.com, monster.com, careerbuilder.com and any other career website to see what administrative assistant positions are available in your area and what they are requiring as far as certification.

    Hope this helps!

We apologize for the delayed response. We reached out to the NHA for an answer to your question and it took some time before they got back to us.

Hello! I am a licensed registered nurse with with 18 years of experience. I was injured at work and required surgery. My surgeon has restricted me from nursing because of the injury. I have been trying to get a job in the medical office field with no success. Would taking the CMAA exam help me to get a position?

  97. Career Step February 08, 2017

    Hi Beth,
First of all we are sorry to hear about your injury, we hope you are having a speedy recovery. Secondly, regarding the CMAA: Certification is not required to enter medical administrative assistant industry. However, certification looks great on a resume and may help employers have more confidence in your skills. It proves that you have the training they are looking for and you will only require minimal additional training.

Becoming nationally certified may increase the number of job opportunities, make you eligible for a higher pay scale, and validate your training and expertise.

The Career Step Medical Administrative Assistant course prepares students very well for this exam. To learn more about the program take a look at this link:

    Hope this helps!

I know the passing score on a CCMA Exam is 390, perfect score is 500, all questions are not worth same amount, some are worth more than others.  When I took the practice test, that I purchased through NHA, the score given to me was in % form. Is there a way to know if questions in certain sections are the ones that are worth more?  And not sure if I can ask this, if not I am assuming no one will reply, but how close is the practice tests to the real thing?  I have been studying, studying, and studying out of my study guide, and have take practice te4st 3x now. I am just nervous that what if the real test is completely different than practice test.

I am in Canada and have almost completed my coursework. We do not have certification for a Medical Office Assistant here but can I still take this CMAA test? Do I have to write it at a US testing center or can I do the test online? Thank you!

    Hi Cheri,
Thanks so much for your question! The NHA offers both the CMAA (Certified Medical Administrative Assistant) and CEHRS (Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist) exams through PSI testing centers. There are several PSI testing centers in Canada (Alberta, Ontario, British Columbia, Manitoba) so if you wanted to take the certification exams in one of those provinces, you certainly could.

    I hope this helps!
