The Careful Student’s 10-point School Checklist
Whether you’re deciding which schools should be on your short list or trying to decide between schools, it helps to have a checklist to judge against. We’ve put together this checklist to help in your decision making!
1. Education Type
Do you want to earn a degree or can you achieve your career goals with a certificate, or non-degree, program? Make sure you know what your career goals are and what type of education you’ll need.
2. On-Campus or Online
When you’re deciding on a school, knowing whether you want to go to school on-campus or online will narrow down your options. With the increasing availability of online education, many adult learners are going this route because of the schedule flexibility it provides.
3. Program Quality
How does the training you’re considering (not just the school, but the actual program) stack up against others? Will you be getting a quality education for your money?
4. Industry/Employer Relationships
What types of relationships does your school have with employers? Will your school’s training help you gain the qualifications employers are looking for?
Be sure you know what you’ll be paying for. What is covered by your program, and if you’re taking out loans will your new career allow you to earn enough to cover your payments?
6. Credential Preparation
Will you need an industry credential to work? Will your program prepare you for the credential exam or will you need to purchase additional preparation materials?
If you’re attending on-campus, do your instructors have office hours where you can get additional help? If you’re studying online, who will you contact when you have questions?
8. Job search assistance
Does your school offer any sort of assistance designed to help you turn your education into a job? What type of resources will you have access to after graduation?
9. Study Resources
Does your training include access to any additional resources such as subscription references, seminars, or special libraries? Are textbooks included, and if not how much will they cost?
How will you interact with your classmates? Having a study buddy can make your studying more effective, so it’s a great idea to find out how you’ll be able to connect with other students.
