2013 AAPC Salary Survey
The American Academy of Professional Coders conducts a salary survey each year. Whether you’re already working as a coder, you’re studying to become one, or you’re considering medical coding as a possible career change, the 2013 Salary Survey has some encouraging information.
Here’s a quick snapshot of the highlights:
- The unemployment rate for Certified Professional Coders is 1.7%, which is nearly half of last year’s rate and well below the national average of 7.4%.
- The average annual salary for CPC credentialed coders is $48,593. The article states that “as experience increases substantially, so does the average salary” and “the most substantial salary increases take place in the first 20 years of experience.”
- 2012 showed a sharp increase in employment and a positive hiring trend, which is expected to continue.
It is also interesting to note that there are numerous possibilities for certified coders to further branch out and diversify their skill sets through specialty credentials and to fill other roles throughout health information management and technology.
