2014 HCPCS Book Update

Coding and BillingNo Comments

HCPCS level II codes are used to supplement CPT codes. They account for supplies, durable medical equipment, and other services not accounted for in the Level I CPT codes.  They are five digit alpha-numeric codes developed by the American Medical Association and used by Medicare and other payers.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released the annual modifications to the HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System) code set. The updates can be found at http://www.cms.gov/Medicare/Coding/HCPCSReleaseCodeSets/Alpha-Numeric-HCPCS.html.

However, the publication of the 2014 HCPCS book has been delayed. The government shutdown last fall pushed several deadlines behind schedule; the expectation to receive the HCPCS book from our publisher in mid January. Because of the ease of using an actual hard copy book, many coders are impatiently waiting for the new HCPCS book—including all of our students who have requested their CPT and HCPCS books within the last few weeks.

Even though it’s a pain, waiting a few extra weeks to receive the 2014 CPT and HCPCS books is to your advantage because these codes will be accurate for the rest of the year. Thank you for your patience, and you’ll be the first to know when the new books start shipping out!
