Housekeeping: Taxes and Moving

To make sure we’re all in the best position possible to make the most of your referral efforts we have a just a couple housekeeping items today: taxes and moving.

We hate to bring it up…but tax season is right around the corner. If you earned $600 or more in 2014 for referring your friends or family, you should have already received a W-9 form from us that we need you to complete and return to us (if you haven’t already done so.) If you’ve earned more than $600 this year and haven’t returned it yet, please do so ASAP! We won’t be able to send future payouts until we get this information back from you. For those who’ve received $600 or more, we will also be sending you a 1099 form the beginning of next year, which you’ll need to include when you fill out your income tax forms.

Onto our second housekeeping item—please let us know if you’ve moved recently and haven’t already updated your address with us! Without a current address, your Referral Rewards checks may be lost or delayed, and we’d really love to make sure you get paid (especially this time of year when those holiday bills start coming in!). Please also remember to let us know anytime you change your email or phone number so we can always reach you if we have questions about your referrals.  If you are a current student, you can update your information from your course homepage after you login. Otherwise, send an email to referral@careerstep.com with your new information and we can update it in the system.

How do I obtain tax information so I can file income taxes for the $2795 I paid for the course?  Told by tax preparer I should be receiving a 1098 form so I can file expenses for the course on my 2015 income tax.

    Hi Dionne,

This is the official response from our Finance/Legal team on taxes…

Career Step is not eligible for the 1098-T form because we are not a federally funded college or university—we are a post secondary proprietary school. However, we are happy to email you a copy of your receipt showing the payments you have made to Career Step for your records.

If you would like a copy of your receipt, please email your request to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). If you have any further questions regarding the tax treatment on your program, please contact your personal tax consultant.

    Hope that helps!

so u dont have 2202 tax forms or any reciepts stating just tution and days/length of course ? i was told i cant file in canada due to this and are these courses even reconized as ur saying ur not evne a college ?

    Dear Julie,
Thank you for contacting Career Step.

Please note that in most cases we do not fall within the eligible category for an income tax credit and do not mail out a 1098-T form or the Canadian 2202T form.  We are a non-accredited Vocational Post-Secondary Proprietary School and typically are not eligible for a tax deduction.

If your intent is to claim tuition on your tax return you will need to contact your Tax Consultant for any advice. The finance department will send you a personal email with your receipt.

    Respectfully,
    Career Step, LLC Billing Office
