Oh, Canada! Getting More Referrals in the Great White North

Canadian Referrals

Did you know that Career Step has a site dedicated to Canada? If you are looking for ways to increase your referrals, you may want to consider looking to Canada!

Just in case you haven’t heard us shouting it from the rooftops, there is a shortage of qualified medical transcriptionists in Canada. (We even have a Canadian employer partner looking to hire 300 more transcriptionists by the end of June.) We really need your help in getting the word out about the need for more Canadian students, especially those interested in medical transcription!

If you live in or have friends or family in Canada—then getting the word out is pretty easy. But for the rest of you, here are some ideas:

Online Job Boards – Did you know that there is a Canadian version of Indeed.com? Many referrers have had success with Indeed and other job boards in the past—so this might be something to try.

Participate in Online Forums – Do a search to find any work from home or MT blogs or forums that have Canadian ties and participate in discussions. Remember to always check the site to see what you are allowed to post and be respectful of the opinions of others. Not everyone will love your job as much as you do!

Write an Article – There are several online sites (US and Canada) that are looking for content relevant to their site. Study Magazine is a great Canadian education site that we just published an article in, but I’m sure there are many others out there too.

Local Newspapers – Look for free or low cost newspapers to advertise in. Just like the US, Canada has a lot of smaller community newspapers you might be able to put a small ad in.

Paid Search – If you have your own independent website and a budget for it, you may want to consider doing paid searches in Canada. Note: This is only if you have a website or blog that is separate from your Career Step Referral Page. (You cannot do paid search campaigns directly to your Career Step Referral Page because Google only allows one entity to do paid search campaigns to a domain, and we are already doing paid searches to the Career Step site.)

These are just a few of our ideas, but based on the creativity we’ve seen from our referrers in the past, I’m sure you can come up with many more!  Just remember to make sure that everything you do, no matter what it is, links back to your referral website or includes your referrer ID in the website link to ensure you get credit.

Helpful hint: At the bottom right hand corner of your referral webpage, there is a Canadian flag you can click on in order to get to our Canadian site. If you click through to the Canadian site from this link, any website link you share from the Canadian site will automatically include your referrer ID so you can get credit for any enrollments.

Are you currently getting referrals from Canada? What has or hasn’t worked for you? We’d love to hear your story in the comments section below!

I would be interested in working with a Canadian company as a MT… is this a possibility?

    Hi Michelle,

Yes! There are absolutely MT positions available with Canadian companies. Our Canadian employer partners are pretty much begging us for grads. For more information, check out the Student and Graduate Community (http://community.careerstep.com). There’s a lot of information there about companies hiring in Canada, and you can also find information (or read past transcripts) on Canadian employer hosted chat events.

    Best wishes!

could you please tell me which Canadian employer partners you are affiliated with? I live in Canada, Alberta and I just want to make sure the MAA with EHR is recognized here prior to spending the money, and which companies. I have not been able to find it anywhewe.

    Nova,

Our course is approved in Alberta, and upon graduation we will help you network on who is hiring in your area once you are done.  You can also go to indeed.ca and type in Alberta to get an idea of the positions in the area currently. As you visit the website you can see the demand there is in your area.
