Billie WirthlinMy husband and I married young. We had been dating for two years and tied the knot soon after my high school graduation. We have been married now for nine years, and I am blessed to have such a supportive husband.

A few years after the wedding, we found out we were expecting our first child. We couldn’t have been happier! Bringing a child into the world puts a brand new perspective on life, and being with my son meant more to me than anything. I wanted to be there for his first laugh, first step, first word, and every moment in his precious life. My husband and I agreed that the best thing for our family would be for me to stay home. I felt guilty, though, putting all the financial responsibility on my husband. I had heard of others working from home and knew that if others could do it, so could I.

I spent over a year researching various work-at-home opportunities, trying out jobs (all of which were low-paying and uninteresting), and falling for scams. I had come across an advertisement for a work-at-home position as a medical transcriptionist. It was the first time I had ever heard the term “medical transcriptionist,” and I had no idea what it even meant. This company promised quality training with the purchase of their software. Thankfully, I did some more research on the company and found it to be a scam. At the time, I had assumed that medical transcription in general was a scam. Finding the “perfect work-at-home opportunity” ended up being much more of a challenge than I had imagined.

Not long after our first son was born, my husband and I found out we were expecting our second. I was even more determined to find a way to contribute to the financial support of our family. My mother-in-law told me about a friend of hers worked at home as a medical transcriptionist. I quickly got online to research the medical transcription career once again. I discovered that to be a successful MT I would need training. Through my mother-in-law, I was introduced to Career Step. I wanted to be sure that I was making the right decision though, and I continued to research Career Step, even going as far as calling the HR departments of several medical transcription employers. All of them highly recommended Career Step.

I was so excited about the possibility of finally finding the perfect opportunity that I signed up right away. In September of 2006, I received my Certificate of Graduation from the Medical Transcription program. I received and accepted a job offer less than a week after graduating. Medical transcription can be a difficult job, but I loved the challenge.

Friends and family members began to ask me about the field and how they too could get started. Most of them, like me, had never heard of medical transcription but loved the idea of working from home. I am so thankful for the many people who took the time to answer my questions when I was researching the medical transcription field, and I was happy to answer any and all questions I received. If I didn’t know the answer, I would find one.

In May of 2006, I visited the Career Step forum and opened up a thread regarding changes Career Step had made to their site. It was through this thread that I discovered the Career Step referral opportunity, and I signed up right away!

I receive emails and phone calls weekly from individuals who want to know more. Most are excited about the chance to speak to someone who has actually been through the course, graduated, and is experienced in the medical transcription field. It makes the opportunity that much more “real” to them. I am so grateful for the opportunity to spread this information to others: YES! There is a rewarding, legitimate, work-at-home opportunity out there!

The best advice I can give to referrers:

  • It’s easier to sell something you believe in. I truly love Career Step and that shows when I talk to someone about the opportunity.
  • Social networking is HUGE right now. Twitter, Blogs, Facebook—get out there     “virtually” and make yourself (and the opportunity) known.
  • Business is personal (but not too personal). If your tweets are nothing more than link after link to your website, no one is going to take you seriously. They like to know there is a real person behind the computer. So be yourself!
  • Take risks and stretch from your comfort zone. If you want to be successful, you have to get out there and share this amazing opportunity! Tell your friends, family, everyone. Pass out business cards. Hang up flyers. Just do it!
