Referrer Spotlight: Penny Zimmerman
Working from home was the BEST decision I have ever made!!
Before kids, I was a Respiratory therapist. I loved the medical field, but I got too attached to some of my patients, and many of them never made it home from the nursing home/hospitals where I worked.
After I had my first child, my husband and I discussed me being able to stay at home with our daughter and raise her myself versus a daycare/babysitter. My sister-in-law had enrolled in a local business college for a Medical Secretarial Program, and Medical Transcription was part of the course. I knew it was the right choice for me also, so I signed up. It took me a whole year, 4 days/wk, 8a-4p daily, with about 1 hour’s travel each way, but I completed my course. At that point, I had 2 children, a 2-year-old and a newborn (whom I had given birth to during my 12-month training and had to go back 3 days after coming home from the hospital or I would get docked a letter grade). I loved what I was doing, but knew there had to be an easier way to do it!
Then a friend had heard about the Career Step training course online. It was the same program I took at a local business college, but you could work at it at your own pace, in the comfort of your own home, at a fraction of the cost, and still get the same jobs after graduating!! I contacted Career Step and they told me about the Referral Program and that, even though I did not graduate from Career Step, I was still able to refer others to their program and get paid!! It was really a no-brainer to me on which program I was going to refer to others when I was asked about my training, my job, and being able to work from home!!
Since then, I have referred nearly 2 dozen friends, family, acquaintances to the Career Step program for Medical Transcription/Editing. I recently gave a presentation to my local MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group, and most of the ladies who attend my MOPS group are stay-at-home moms, who may be looking for a way to make some extra income, without sacrificing time with their children. When speaking with others, I just keep my ears open all the time for either a need or a complaint that working from home may help them with!
I know it has been a blessing for me and my family, and when my kids are asked what they want to be when they grow up, they say they want to do what mommy does, so they can stay home with their kids too! So, I know what I am doing is definitely the right choice for me and I know it can change the lives of others also!! This is why I refer others to the Career Step programs!
