Why Take the CMT Exam?
In today's economic environment, job security and a steady income are crucial. Few industries show as much promise as healthcare, which is expected to generate 3 million new jobs before 2016 — more than any other industry (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006). As medical transcription continues to play a vital role in the expanding healthcare industry, those who choose this field have a secure career outlook. The U.S. Department of Labor specifically states, "Job opportunities should be good, especially for those who are certified."
Earning your CMT credential will improve your career within medical transcription by offering:
- Industry recognized quality and professionalism
- Improved income stability
- Greater career security
Have you already earned your CMT credential? To recertify, all CMTs must earn at least 30 continuing education credits every 3 years. Instead of spending days to earn just a few credits at expensive conferences, take Career Step's affordable CMT Exam Prep course and earn 33 CECs in just 75 hours of course work!
Industry Recognized Quality and Professionalism
Career Step training and the Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) credential are recognized by employers as the marks of qualified, competent, and experienced medical transcriptionists. As a certified medical transcriptionist, you'll be in high demand because employers know that you are a professional who has the skills and experience necessary to quickly produce accurate and high quality medical records.
Improved Income Stability
The CMT credential is only awarded to medical transcriptionists who have clearly demonstrated a high level of professional competency and commitment. The credential assures employers of your quality and value, and, as experience and credentials are valued and rewarded in the healthcare industry, medical transcriptionists who earn the CMT credential are often offered higher pay rates.
Greater Career Security
The U.S. Department of Labor predicts the need for medical transcriptionists will increase by 14 percent through 2016, which is faster than most occupations. This projected growth is due, in part, to the country's aging population that will create additional demand for medical treatments, tests, and procedures, all of which will need to be documented by medical transcriptionists, and, with the CMT credential, you'll be recognized as one of the best in the industry.
About the CMT Exam
The CMT exam is designed and offered by AHDI (the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity), and can be taken by anyone, although AHDI recommends that candidates have at least two years of experience in acute care. The exam is designed to promote a high level of professionalism and improve the quality of the medical transcription industry, while recognizing the achievements of individuals who meet set professional standards.
