During 2006 and 2007, the Good Morning America program on ABC ran a series about legitimate, income-producing work at home opportunities. Medical transcription was highlighted several times. Tory Johnson reports on the MT industry, "I talked to a dozen companies that hire home-based agents, and they're all eager for new hires — both part-time and full-time employees as well as independent contractors. Some of the biggest employers in this field are Focus Infomatics, MedQuist and Spheris [All of which recommend Career Step]... Compensation methods for medical transcriptionists vary. Some are paid based on the number of hours they work or on the number of lines they transcribe. Others receive a base pay per hour with incentives for extra production. Employees of transcription services and independent contractors almost always receive production-based pay. Independent contractors earn more than do transcriptionists who work for others, but independent contractors have higher expenses than their corporate counterparts, receive no benefits, and may face higher risk of termination than do employed transcriptionists.
