About the RMT Exam Prep Course

The Career Step RMT Exam Prep course gives you all the tools you need to successfully pass the RMT exam and show that you have a solid foundational knowledge of medical transcription.

With Career Step's online training, you'll have 24/7 access to the online course material, the freedom and flexibility to study on your own schedule from the comfort of your own home, and a multitude of networking opportunities through the student forum and chat rooms. You'll also have access to our student and technical support teams, who are available to help with content and tech questions.

The RMT Exam Prep course is divided into modules, or course subjects, which each include individual units and exercises. Throughout the program there are elements of the AHDI Book of Style, labs/diagnoses, pathology, pharmacology, and both specialty and system-related exercises, practical portions, and test. The program is designed to be completed in about 75 hours, and the individual modules are as follows:

Program Orientation

The purpose of this module is to provide an overview of training components, program navigation, exercises and tests, and tips and resources for getting the most out of the RMT Prep Training Program.

Building Blocks of Medical Terminology

This module focuses on word building with word roots, prefixes, suffixes, and learning the combining and plural forms of medical words. Students will also review meanings, spellings, abbreviations, and other aspects related to medical language.

English Language and Grammar

This module focuses on English language and grammar rules. The student will identify and apply correct grammar, usage, and punctuation based on the conventions of the English language and the rules presented in the AHDI Book Of Style, Second Edition.

Anatomy and Disease — Block 1

The four Anatomy and Disease modules guide students through the information and question types involving anatomy, pharmacology, and disease asked on the RMT exam. These modules are broken into the main body systems, with this first block focusing on the circulatory, digestive, and endocrine systems.

Anatomy and Disease — Block 2

The second block of Anatomy and Disease focuses on the lymphatic, integumentary, and muscular systems. Disease processes, pathophysiology, structure and function of systems, and medical terminology are also explored. Exercises and practical components further assess and reinforce the student's current knowledge base and identify areas in which increased proficiency may be needed.

Anatomy and Disease — Block 3

The third block of Anatomy and Disease covers the nervous, reproductive, and respiratory systems. Again, disease processes, pathophysiology, structure and function of systems, and medical terminology are presented. Exercises and practical components further assess and reinforce the student's current knowledge base and identify areas in which increased proficiency may be needed.

Anatomy and Disease — Block 4

The fourth and final block of Anatomy and Disease addresses the sensory, skeletal, and urinary systems. The student will review the body systems previously covered and will further explore disease processes, pathophysiology, structure and function of systems, and medical terminology. Exercises and practical components will also assess and reinforce the student's current knowledge base and identify areas in which increased proficiency may be needed.

Medicolegal/Ancillary Information

The RMT exam outline states that 10% of the multiple choice exam questions test applicants' knowledge of medicolegal issues relating to the healthcare record. The goal of this module is twofold: to teach important medicolegal concepts and processes and to provide ancillary information, including test-taking tips, study tips, dialect help, and expectations for exam day.

RMT Practicum

The practical portion of the program consists of transcription, editing, and proofreading of a variety of medical reports and specialties, allowing the student to demonstrate the skills and knowledge gained from work experience and the RMT Exam Prep course.

Practice Exam

The practice test allows the student to experience a test format similar to the RMT exam and to assess their skills and knowledge in preparation for the RMT exam itself. Like the certification exam, this practice exam will have an objective component and a transcription component.
