Final Exam Overview

Career Step provides the opportunity for every student to take a final exam upon completion of the coursework. Students who pass the final exam earn a Certificate of Graduation. The final exam also serves as an opportunity for students to prepare for the skills assessment evaluations that are a routine part of the medical transcription job application process. This unit is designed to provide you with the information you need to understand and successfully prepare for the final exam. Please read this information carefully before scheduling your final exam (at the end of this unit).

About the Final Exam

What is the final exam like?
Career Step's final examination is an online test presented in two portions. The first portion is an objective portion that consists of true/false, fill-in-the-blank, and multiple-choice questions, along with exercises in editing and proofreading. The objective portion resembles the exercises and tests throughout the course, and covers the exact content contained in the course. There will not be a typing test on the final exam.

The transcription portion of the final exam includes eight reports of different types, all of which have been covered extensively in the course. These eight reports will total approximately 15 minutes of dictation. You may use any resources on the final except human. Please do not post questions about the final on the Career Step Forum or Chatroom, or enlist the help of friends or relatives. The final exam is meant to be an assessment of how well you have retained the principles taught throughout the course.

How long do I have to complete the exam?
Students have 48 hours (two full days) to complete the entire exam (both portions). You should schedule the final exam for a time in which you will have two consecutive free days. Although it will not take the entire 48 hours to complete the exam (it typically takes an average of 6-7 hours), you may want the additional time to go over your answers before submitting the final.

When does my 48 hours begin?
Your 48-hour time period begins when you log in to the final exam site; however, you must begin your final exam on the day you have scheduled to begin.

Note:
It is important to contact Student Services as soon as possible if you experience issues which impact your ability to begin or complete the final exam AS SCHEDULED. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of your exam.
