The Journal of AHIMA on ICD-10 Root Operations

Posted on 10.30.2013

The Journal of AHIMA is the American Health Information Management Association’s monthly publication. The publication strives to keep tens of thousands of HIM professionals up to date on the current trends and regulatory affairs related to the HIM industry.

With ICD-10 looming on the horizon, The Journal of AHIMA has been regularly publishing articles about the implementation of the ICD-10 code set. The Journal is currently running a series of articles that relate specifically to the use of the root operations, which are the basis for procedure coding in ICD-10-PCS. Each article in the series focuses on a few specific root operations with a definition of the root operation, examples of procedures that employ that root operation, and an example that compares the ICD-9 coding to ICD-10 coding in relation to that root operation.

This article, from the October 2013 edition of The Journal of AHIMA, is most recent in this series and provides education on how to assign codes for procedures that involve the root operations of restriction, occlusion, and dilation.

HIM professionals involved with coding would be well advised to use these articles as a means of developing a better understanding of ICD-10-PCS root operations coding concepts prior to implementation on Oct 1, 2014.

We thank AHIMA for furnishing this valuable educational tool to its members.
