AHIMA Membership With Medical Coding & Billing Program

LEHI, Utah—October 10, 2017—Career Step, an online provider of career-focused education and professional training, is pleased to announce that a student membership in The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) will now be included with enrollment in its Professional Medical Coding and Billing program.

“We are excited to offer AHIMA student membership as part of our medical coding and billing program,” said Laurie McBrierty, Career Step Vice President of Product Management. “This new addition to our program will allow our students to begin networking with other health information management (HIM) professionals before they graduate. When they are ready to start looking for a job, those connections will give them a distinct advantage in the job market.”

Career Step’s Professional Medical Coding and Billing program prepares students to take the CCA exam offered through AHIMA and the CPC exam offered through AAPC. A voucher to take either exam is included upon graduation.

“An AHIMA membership is so valuable to students,” said Pamela Lane, MS, RHIA, AHIMA interim CEO. “They will belong to the premier association for health information management and will connect immediately with 103,000 HIM professionals. In addition, membership will give them access to our mentor program, online peer communities, member discounts, and quality industry information.”

I am so looking forward to starting this program. If my local Michigan Works cannot help me pay for it, I plan to apply for a Fannie Mae loan. I am so excited.

Thank you for adding this for new students, and sharing it with those of us who’ve been with the program for a while. Membership groups have so many resources!

I purchased my student membership for AHIMA. I did not realize it was included with my course. Is there a way I can be reimbursed for that fee or can Career Step offer something else?

I have finished the medical billing and coding program at CareerStep. I have obtained my CPC-A. Now I want to get my Rhit. I am a member of AAPC, do I need to join AHIMA to take my Rhit? And will I qualify for taking it by graduating from CareerStep? Thank you for your help.

Hi Renee, eligibility to sit for AHIMA’s RHIT certification does not require membership in AHIMA. It does, however, require graduation from an AHIMA approved associates degree program in health information management. Since this is the case, graduation from Career Step’s Professional Medical Coding and Billing program is not sufficient for RHIT certification exam eligibility. Certification as a medical coder though is a great step on the path to becoming RHIT certified!

The link below shows the eligibility requirements for sitting for the RHIT.

How does the voucher work for either AHIMA or AAPC. Once we complete the program modules and pass the final exam, is that when the voucher is issued to us? Is the voucher for the full amount of either exam?
