How to Make Sure You Stay a Motivated Student

Do you ever feel like there is just not enough time in the day? So many things demand your attention and it seems like something new comes up EVERY DAY! Many things distract us from our plans and goals.

In addition to the element of time there is discouragement. Discouragement can be a black hole when it comes to studying. I get discouraged when I don’t immediately grasp a concept or I’m struggling memorizing terms. I even get discouraged because there isn’t enough time!

With distractions and discouragement holding us back, how should we stay motivated to study? Here are some tips that have helped me:

Manage your time. Don’t let time manage you.
The key is in not spending time, but in investing it. -Stephen R. Covey

The truth is that unexpected things DO happen every day. Have a realistic amount of time you want to devote to daily studying. It doesn’t have to be 4 hour study sessions; I said “realistic.” Promise yourself that while you are studying you are “investing” your time, not just “spending” it. This means FOCUS, even if it is only 20 minutes at a time. Do your best to focus for those 20 minutes, and don’t let unexpected distractions push you around!

Goals that are not written down are just wishes.
Sometimes a lack of motivation requires a few short term goals. Example: “I will work on my course for 2 hours each day.” Personally, I have to write goals like this down otherwise a courtroom drama will unfold in my head later on when I argue why I can’t put in my two hours that day. Putting it in writing makes it more concrete. You’re unmotivated side can’t win the courtroom drama if you have written proof!

Use available resources. You are not alone!
“In all honesty, motivation was the hardest thing for me, especially when I got to the difficult parts of the course. One thing that helped me was getting on the student forum. Getting encouragement from other students was definitely a huge help in keeping me motivated at that point in the course. I guess one way to stay motivated in your studies is to find encouragement and give encouragement to those going through the same study.” – Amy, a Career Step Honors Graduate

Taking control of our available time, writing down goals, and reaching out to others for encouragement are just a few great ways to avoid discouragement and stay motivated. Taking a self-paced course requires commitment and discipline. Use these tips to win your internal courtroom drama and stop getting pushed around by unexpected distractions!
