Hello, my name is Astra Coleman and I am a 22-year-old Army wife, currently studying in the Pharmacy Technician program. Right now I’m living in St. Louis, Missouri since my husband received orders to deploy to Iraq for the second time. We recently had our first born son two months before my husband had to leave, and he is now 9 months old. This really takes a toll on our family, but we just keep faith and look forward to being a family again. My son is very active and playful and keeps a smile on my face. These two guys are my motivation and are part of the reason I am in this program. I am willing to do anything to help provide for my family while also helping others.
The reasons I chose to study to become a pharmacy technician were because I like hands-on things and I love to be able to help meet others’ needs. I think this career will fit all of my desires. Being a student and a single parent (for the time being) is a lot of hard work and requires dedication. I am determined to be successful because I want the best for myself and my family.
On a daily basis I am taking care of the needs of my son, which does not leave a lot of time for my studies. So to be successful, I do whatever it takes. While he’s asleep, I spend all of my leisure time studying and getting all my tests done with passing scores. I have had nights were I am up until 2:00 in the morning. Crazy, right? But it is so worth it to me. I feel like it will all pay off in the long run.
Career Step is very helpful to me and has a great support team. Someone I would personally like to acknowledge is my student support teacher Ms. Rebekah Hutchins. She has been a wonderful and helpful person throughout the whole program. She is very patient with me and will explain how to do things step by step until I understand. Rebekah also motivates me with her care and concern. She always lets me know to not hesitate to call if I have any question. I would like to thank her for that.
Some study tips I find helpful are reading and writing down the very important information, then studying it in order to pass the module exams and unit tests. This curriculum has a lot of helpful support services that allow each student to be successful. A word of helpful advice for current or future students is to never give up, use all the support services Career Step provides, and notice which one works best for you. The more determined you are the better results you will get, which means you will succeed. Success holds a better future for your life and also your loved ones.
