The company I was formerly working at was slowly on its way out so I knew I needed to find more stable work. I tried applying for jobs in the healthcare field prior to enrolling in the Medical Administrative Assistant with EHR program through Career Step. I was unable to find a job because my work experience did not give me the proper healthcare related knowledge. I knew that taking this course through Career Step would give me the knowledge that employers were looking for.
I was drawn to the healthcare field because it is one of the largest and fastest growing industries. This is especially true for the town I currently live in. A job in the healthcare field would promise me job security and a stable career that within which I could continue to grow, but I was working a full time job and could not afford to quit work to take traditional classes at a college. My only option was to turn to online classes. The best part about the Career Step program is that you can work at your own pace regardless of your situation. Some days I was unable to study but other days I could spend the entire day studying.
What really appealed to me about Career Step, as opposed to other online courses, was that they were teamed up with my local community college. I knew I wanted to work in the area I was already living in, so I was so thrilled to find out I could list my local college on my resume. It really appealed to employers in my area!
It only took me a few short months to complete the course. I really pushed myself to spend as much time as possible each day because I was so anxious to graduate and start my job search, but it was good to know that I could take it easy on certain days if I needed to. Another big advantage to Career Step is the amazing support system they offer. The student forum was a great place to ask and answer questions from students just like myself, and any time I had questions for staff, whether by phone or email, they were always quick to help.
As soon as I graduated, I signed up to take the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam and the Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) exam, both of which I passed thanks to my training through Career Step. I immediately started applying to jobs and was shocked at how quickly I got responses. I had my first few interviews the first and second week after graduation. Less than a month later, I was offered the position I was most interested in! I have always wanted to work for my local hospital, but I was willing to get my foot in the door wherever I could. Much to my surprise, I was offered the exact position I was looking for at the hospital!
Thanks to Career Step, I was able to get the education and knowledge needed to pass the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam and the Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) exam. My education with Career Step, plus my two certifications were instrumental in helping me quickly find the perfect job. I have already recommended Career Step to anyone I know who is looking to start a new career. The ease of enrollment, flexible study time and structured modules made this the best decision I have ever made!
