The Demise of the Speech Wreck Cartoon

medical transcriptionDid you know Career Step’s Speech Wreck cartoon has been a part of Career Step’s Stepping Up newsletter (now out of print) and Career Step’s Medical Transcription blog since the beginning of 2012? Over the years, it has highlighted the downfall of speech recognition technology (SRT) and the ongoing importance of medical language specialists (MLS) by presenting a comical visual of errors MLSs have submitted to us. But as they say, “All good things must come to an end,”—or do they say, “Every end is just a new beginning”? Whatever way you look at it, we have decided to shelve our Speech Wreck cartoon at this point.

By no means is this an indication that SRT has suddenly surpassed our highest expectations and is no longer spitting out laughed-so-hard-I-almost-peed errors. SRT continues to have big gaping holes in its performance that require top-notch MLSs to fill, and that isn’t likely to change any time soon.

In fact, Career Step’s Medical Transcription & Editor / Medical Transcription Graduates forum has a thread titled “Today’s VR Silly” that was started back in June of 2008 and is still going strong today. If you haven’t had a chance to read all of its pages yet, save it to your bookmarks or favorites for a good pick-me-up when you’re ready to throw your keyboard—or perhaps your whole computer—out the window:

To add to your list of amusements-that-will-save-the-day-one-day, here is a rundown of past blog Speech Wreck cartoons to chuckle over:

Context Counts!
Hungry for Laughter
It’s a Gas!
The Butt of the Joke
Close, but Not Close Enough
Toe Toe Lee Fun Knee
He Shoots! He Misses!

We surely hope you have enjoyed reading the cartoons over the years as much as we have enjoyed drawing them, and who knows, maybe someday the artist within us will burst forth with great vigor and vim and doodle up a few more cartoons just for kicks and giggles!
