Using Social Media for Referrals: Twitter Part 1 | The Basics

In the social media world, Twitter is second only to Facebook and is a great way to increase your referrals. If you’re new to Twitter or are not sure on how to use it to get referrals, here’s some advice.

1. Set up your profile.
Most people overlook the bio section of the Twitter account. It is the perfect place to mention your job and that you’re willing to help others land the job of their dream with online training with Career Step. You can also list your referral webpage in the website location or link to your blog that contains your referral webpage. 2. Write good tweets.
Twitter only allows 140 characters in a tweet, so you have to use your words carefully. This is also where you can use all those great shortcuts we use when texting:

  • Use letters or numbers (2 instead of two, B instead of be).
  • Use symbols (# instead of number, + instead of plus).
  • Use contractions (can’t instead of cannot).
  • Omit words. Your message is usually still readable even without using words like “the” or “an.”
  • Shorten URLs (including your referral webpage page URL). There are lots of websites you can use to shorten URls. is the most used site, and all you have to do (once you sign up for a free account) is copy and paste your URL to get a shortened version.

3. Use hashtags.
Hashtags help non-followers with relevant interests find you. Be careful not to use too many hashtags in a tweet as more than 2 makes your tweet look like spam (and seriously cuts into your 140 characters). Just use the words/hashtags that are the most relevant to your tweet.

4. Follow the right people.
Make sure you are following industry leaders and companies (including Career Step) to stay on top of the latest news. Retweeting relevant industry information will help you gain followers and credibility.

5. Post regularly.
To stay top of mind you should try and tweet at least 3 or 4 times a day. Don’t have that much to say? Remember you can retweet relevant tweets from people you follow. Besides linking to your referral website, you can also link to sites with relevant articles.
