Welcome to our Administrative Assistant program blog. As a student in this program, you’ve taken the first step towards developing the skills you need to become a successful administrative assistant, and this blog is designed to provide you with helpful information as you get started in your new career. We will spotlight some great industries you can work in as well as interview people already working in the field.
In this first post, let’s look at a few stats on the growth expected in the number of administrative assistant jobs. These statistics are all provided by the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, which you can find at www.bls.gov.
The Department of Labor reports:
- Secretaries and administrative assistants held about 4.3 million jobs in 2008—making it one of the largest occupations in the country.
- The largest areas of employment within this occupation are general secretaries, executive secretaries, and administrative assistants (other, smaller classifications within this occupation include medical secretaries and legal secretaries).
- The number of administrative assistant jobs is expected to grow by 11% by 2018, which equals to more than 471,000 new jobs in the United States alone.
This growth puts you in an excellent position as you’re training to work in this field. We look forward to helping you gain the skills you need to succeed, and please feel free to contact your student support advisor with any questions!
