Why A Certificate Program?

We’ve heard from our referrers that when they talk to others about Career Step, this question comes up a lot. When making the decision to go back to school, most people automatically gravitate toward a degree. However, a 2 or 4 year degree isn’t the perfect fit for everyone and a certificate program may be just what they are looking for—even if they don’t know it yet!

Of course, the best program type for your friends and family ultimately depends on their career goals. A certificate program won’t help them become a lawyer. But if they’re going back to school hoping to get a job and earn a good living as quickly and affordably as possible, a certificate program is a great option to consider!

In-demand Careers
The Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys careers every few years and ranks them by their growth and the number of jobs they’re expected to generate. Currently, 13 of the 20 fastest growing careers and 19 of the 20 industries expected to generate the most new jobs require 2 years or less of education.

For anyone who wants to spend less than 2 years in school, this is great news! Certificate programs can help them stand out in the job market by providing tailored training that enables them to quickly develop essential skills, minimizing on-the-job training. And Career Step’s certificate programs include a lot of practical work experience as part of the course, which employers love. It is one of the reasons why more than 84% of our graduates are working in their new career fields.

Quicker Graduation and Job Placement
Certificate programs are a great option because not everyone has the time or ability to go to school for 2 to 4 years (or more). Career Step’s programs are designed to get students trained and working in as short of a time as possible. Since the programs are self-paced, the course completion time really depends on how much time and energy students can dedicate to their studies. On average, Career Step students finish in 11 months, but many of the courses can be completed in as little as 3 months.

One of the key selling points that makes Career Step’s certificate programs stand out from the rest is the fact that they come with student and graduate support! Let’s face it, even the most motivated of us need a little bit of support now and then. Career Step’s instructors are there for the students when they are struggling with a difficult concept or task. They also provide encouragement to keep students on track toward graduation. And our graduate support advisors are trained to help our students transition to the workforce upon graduation. They teach interview skills, provide job search coaching, and can even help with the much dreaded resume.

Affordable Tuition
Anyone who has ever considered going back to school knows how expensive it can be. Below are average estimated costs provided by College Board, an organization that studies trends in higher education.

Type of Institution 2 Years 4 Years
Public 2-year (in state) $6,500 N/A
Public 4-year (in state) $17,800 $35,600
Private non-profit $44,400 $88,800
For profit $30,300 $60,500

Certificate programs on the other hand, take less time so they typically cost significantly less. While the costs of our programs vary, the average cost of a Career Step certificate program is $2,400 for everything!

All of these benefits can make Career Step’s certificate programs a great option for anyone you know who may be interested in going back to school.
