Stephen J. Tober, President and Chief Executive Officer
Steve has spent much of his 25+ years of corporate experience working in or around the education market. In his last position as CEO and President of American InterContinental University, Steve was responsible for serving over 18,000 online students as well as overseeing several brick-and-mortar campuses in both the U.S. and London. Prior to his time as AIU, Steve held executive positions with both public and private technology and web development companies, and he also has experience in the corporate finance law and investment banking sectors. In his role at Career Step, Steve is committed to providing the highest quality education and exceptional service to students, graduates, and partners. He holds a J.D. from University of Virginia.
Nate Swanson, Chief Operating Officer
Nate has 15+ years experience working with emerging growth companies, primarily in the areas of education, technology, and human capital management. He most recently led all non-academic operations at American InterContinental University, managing both online and brick-and-mortar campuses in the U.S. and London. Prior to AIU, Nate was a Partner at ThinkEquity, where he served as head of Software and Business Services research team. Nate is focused on driving the highest levels of student service and support, while also investing for long-term growth and operational effectiveness. He holds a bachelor's degree in Finance and Economics from Augsburg College and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charterholder.
Ryan Ewer, Chief Marketing Officer
Ryan has over 15 years of experience in marketing strategy and implementation. Prior to joining Career Step in 2009 as the Vice President of Marketing, he served as the Director of Marketing for Helius, a Hughes Company, leading the traditional and interactive marketing initiatives for the company. His professional experience also includes management positions with MyFamily.com, Ancestry.co.uk, Provo Labs, QualitySmith, and PointeCast. In his role as Career Step CMO, Ryan is focused on developing the Career Step brand, interactive, demand and retention marketing strategy as well as the company’s Academic Partner Division, while also working with the board of directors on new opportunities. Ryan holds a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University.
Stephen Pemberton, Chief Financial Officer
With 30+ years of experience in financial and operational management, accounting, strategic planning, and mergers and acquisitions, Steve brings a wealth of professional knowledge and experience to Career Step. He has held positions as CEO, CFO, COO, and Controller with companies across a variety of industries including healthcare, financial services, insurance, and data processing, to name a few. Steve is committed to helping Career Step provide the best service to its students, clients, and partners while also driving long-term growth and efficiency. He is a CPA and holds a Master’s of Accountancy from Brigham Young University.
Mike Hodgson, Executive Vice President of Healthcare Products and Partnerships
Mike has over 25 years of experience in the healthcare industry. Prior to joining Career Step, he served in various executive positions, including time with Medical Staffing Network, QuadraMed, and Mediclick, Inc., among others. In all of these positions, Mike was responsible for driving positive change in sales, operations, and finance. He is focused on improving productivity through strategic business planning and is committed to finding positive solutions that strengthen Career Step’s position within the online education market. Mike holds a bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Illinois.
Jerolyn Robertson, Vice President of Academics
A Career Step graduate herself, Jerolyn has been in the healthcare documentation industry since 2002. After graduating from the Career Step program, she briefly worked as a pharmacy technician and attended the pharmacy program at the University of Utah before being offered a position with Career Step as the Skills Assessment Coordinator. In 2009, Jerolyn was promoted to Vice President of Academics, where she establishes and oversees the processes that help Career Step students smoothly progress from enrollment through graduation. Jerolyn holds a degree from Stevens-Henager College of Business in Office Administration.
Judson Smith, Vice President of Continuing Education
Judson brings more than 20 years of experience in emergency medical services to his role overseeing Career Step’s Continuing Education Division. A licensed critical care paramedic, he also currently serves as an officer in an Air Force Reserves aeromedical evacuation squadron. In 2014 Judson founded Code3 CME to provide EMT, paramedic, and critical care transport training with a level of educational support he felt was lacking in the industry. Career Step acquired Code3 CME in 2016, and Judson joined Career Step at that time as the Vice President of Continuing Education. Judson holds a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from Lindenwood University.
Ben Hartman, Vice President of Enrollments
Ben Hartman joined Career Step in 2009 as an Enrollment Advisor, where he was an important part of the team as the organization transitioned to a more consultative approach. In the last 6 years, Ben has advanced within the Enrollment team, becoming Enrollment Manager in February 2011 and Director of Enrollments in April 2013. Within these roles, he has headed efforts to improve sales technology; strategically reorganized the sales staff; and driven overall sales and budgeting. He has been essential to growing the Direct Enrollments Division and driving Career Step’s growth to bring the Career Step opportunity to more students and improve the student experience. Ben holds a Bachelor’s in Business with an emphasis in Finance from Dixie State College.
Christopher F. Charles, Vice President of Operations and Client Management
Chris has over 10 years of experience in technology management, process improvement, and business development. During his previous tenure with Facility Management Engineering of St. George, Utah, Chris served as the Project Manager and Principle Consultant for clients such as NASA, PeaceHealth, Wyoming Medical Center, ConAgra Foods, and Universal Studios, among others. Chris brings this experience to Career Step where he oversees the company’s information systems infrastructure and works to ensure it supports the company's clients, products, student base, and employees. Chris holds a BS degree in Computer and Information Technology with an emphasis in Computer Science from Dixie State College.
D. Allen Miller, Vice President of People Strategy
D. Allen Miller has 25 years of experience in both domestic and international business environments. Allen brings a clear understanding of what effective human capital management can do to enhance productivity and reduce costs, and throughout his entire career he has been focused on translating theoretical concepts into bottom line results. At Career Step, Allen uses that experience to build and support the company culture, hire the best employees, and encourage personal accountability for the company’s mission and values. He is focused on helping Career Step maximize the potential of its employees. Allen holds a Master’s of Organizational Behavior degree from Brigham Young University and has been awarded the Society for Human Resource Management’s SPHR, its highest professional designation.
Laurie A. McBrierty, Vice President of Product Management
Laurie brings close to 30 years of experience in healthcare, healthcare information systems, and product management to Career Step, where she drives the product management of the company’s offerings. Prior to joining Career Step, Laurie served in various executive positions with companies such as xG Health Solutions, WellPoint, Resolution Health, QuadraMed, Kaiser Permanente, SoftMed, 3M HIS, and Stanford Health Services. She has also served on various boards and committees within the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and is a respected leader in health information management. Laurie holds a bachelor’s degree in Information Systems Management from the University of San Francisco.
Christopher L. Powell, Vice President of Software and Program Development
Chris has over 15 years of experience with online learning technologies. Prior to joining Career Step, Chris served as the Director of Software Engineering at Hughes Solutions Group as well as in a number of architect/senior software engineering positions at companies including Helius, PointeCast, and ibtraining.com. In these previous positions, Chris was responsible for designing, building, deploying, and managing online learning platforms, and he holds U.S. Patent 6,978,115, Method And System For Training in an Adaptive Manner. At Career Step, Chris leads all software and program development activities, working to ensure students the best learning experience through Career Step’s learning technologies and quality curriculum. Chris holds MS and BS degrees in Computer Science from Brigham Young University.
