2019 Coding Books

We have compiled the following table to help you decide which books you may want to update. If updates were made to a module and you updated your version of that module, you may want to consider updating your associated codebook/textbook as well. From the table below you can see what code/textbooks are mainly used for which modules.

CODE / TEXTBOOK

Codebook/Textbook ICD-10 Coding Module CPT/HCPCS Block 1 & 2 Advanced ICD-10 Coding Module Coding Practicum Module
AHA Coding Handbook Used for this module Not used for this module Used for this module Not used for this module
ICD-10-CM Used for this module Not used for this module Used for this module Used for this module
ICD-10-PCS Used for this module Not used for this module Used for this module Used for this module
CPT Not used for this module Used for this module Not used for this module Used for this module
HCPCS Not used for this module Used for this module Not used for this module Used for this module

Example: You chose to update the ICD-10 Coding module. If you update your ICD-10 Coding module to the newest version and already have last year’s AHA Coding Handbook, you will need to order a new AHA Coding Handbook. In some instances after updates have been made, we have seen that the previous year’s book will not match the updated module.

Additional Considerations:

You can take the CPC exam with the current or past year’s books. This means in 2019 you can take the exam with the 2019 or 2018 codebooks. However, the AAPC says the following about which books to use for the CPC exam: All AAPC exams are based on the current calendar year’s code sets, so we strongly suggest you use the current year’s books. The previous calendar year’s books may be used on an exam, but you would be at obvious disadvantage doing so.

The following books are required for each certification exam if you are purchasing books for exam purposes:

  • CCA – ICD-10 CM, ICD-10 PCS, ICD-10 CPT
  • CPC – ICD-10 CM, ICD-10 CPT, ICD-10 HCPCS

Books are requested at key points in the coursework. We recommend you only purchase books to replace those you have previously received, as books you request later in the course will automatically be sent as the most current edition.
