Pharmacy Technician Final Exam FAQs

Pharmacy Technician2 Comments

You can’t graduate without passing the final, so naturally we receive lots of questions about the final exam. To help ease any test anxiety and help you go into the process with eyes wide open, here are a few frequently asked final exam questions.

Eligibility: Students are eligible to take the final exam once they have met the following requirements:

  • Every unit test and module exam in the course should be completed; we require that you score at least an 85% or higher on each test and module exam.
  • All pharmacy software labs in the Retail Pharmacy Practice module should be completed.
  • Enrollment status is current, or has been kept current with extensions. If it has expired, you need to purchase an extension. Your enrollment expires at 7pm Eastern time on your expiration date. You must submit your final exam by that time. Please factor this in to your study plan.
  • Account is paid in full or current with your optional payment plan.

Do I need to schedule to take the final exam?
No, you don’t need to schedule to take the final exam. When you are ready to sit down and take the exam, you just need to go to page 11 of the Final Exam Preparation module and click on the “Start Final Exam” button. This will take you into the final exam testing site.

Do I need to schedule the final exam retake?
No, you don’t need to schedule a retake. You’ll take the exam again just like you did the first time. There is a mandatory two week waiting period if you do not pass, starting from the day you received your results. The system will not allow you to take it before then. If you are a graduate, you can take the exam again anytime you would like; there is no waiting period.

How many attempts do I have at the final exam?
You have 3 opportunities to take the final exam. We strongly recommend taking all 3 final exams even if you pass the first time, and we keep the highest score. By retaking your final exam it will further prepare you for the PTCB Exam.

How long is the final exam and can I use my books?
The final exam is a timed 3-hour exam. It is 100 multiple choice questions, and it is closed book. This is in preparation for the PTCE, which is a timed, closed book 2- hour exam comprised of 90 multiple choice questions.

How often are final exams graded?
You will receive your final exam grades within two business days by email letting you know if you passed or failed. Then, you will be directed in the email to your grade book where you’ll see the exact grade you scored.

How come my grade book says I have not completed the final exam when I have completed the exam and submitted it for grading?
Your grade book says you have not complete the exam because your exam hasn’t been graded yet. Once your exam grade is available to be posted, you will see that your exam score is complete and will be able to see the actual grade.

These are some highlights of frequently asked questions in regards to the final exam. You can also refer to the Final Exam Preparation module in the pharmacy technician training program for all information regarding the final exam.

    Hi Stephen,

The final exam reviews everything from the course. Areas of particular importance include pharmaceutical calculations and the top 200 drug list, but again everything is covered.

What happens if you fail the exam and your course has expired?

  4. David Thayer October 09, 2014

I am having trouble with the math part of the exam. I also did not realize half the exam is on the pharmaceutical calculations, this seams off balance. I think the math is not that important because working in a pharmacy. I have not used any of the math that is taught in the course. I think its over doing it if anyone else feels the same way email me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

    Hi Maegan,

As long as you have exam attempts left (you can take the final a total of 3 times), you can purchase an extension and retake the exam. We have 1 month extensions available to people in that situation, and you would need to work with the extensions department to get that all squared away. You can reach them directly at 1-888-657-5752 option 2.

    Best wishes!

    Hi David,

Pharmaceutical Calculations accounts for 1/3 of the final exam, Pharmacology another 1/3, and the rest of the exam will cover Pharmacy Law, Business of Pharmacy, Institutional Pharmacy, and Prescriptions (DEA numbers, sig codes).

I didn’t need to calculate very often in the pharmacy either, but I sure needed it for the PTCB examination.  If you would like some extra help in math, I would be happy to help you. I would recommend re-doing all the reviews, unit tests, and the module exam over and over. I can also send you some practice problems to work through.  Repetition really is the key.

Please contact me at 1-888-657-5752 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

    Hi Jenna,

You can expect to have your exam results back in 1-2 weeks after you’ve submitted the exam.

Best of luck on the final!

If I took my final a day before my course ended will I still be able to see my results if I login after it expires? smile

  10. Instructor Susan Tuckett October 16, 2015

If your program has expired before your results email is sent asking you to access your grade book to see your scores, our Skills Assessment department will let you know your scores within that email.

  11. Dung Le March 15, 2016

I still have long ways to go before I have to take my final exam for this program. I’m just really confused and curious about the PTCB and PTCE exams. You use those terms interchangeably throughout the article. Which one should I prepare for after the final exam has been completed? Which one will reward me with a certificate and which one will reward me with my license? Again, I’m really confused so please help me understand.

    Hi Dung,

PTCB stands for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. They are the governing body for PT certification and they administer the PTCE which is the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam.  The PTCB awards the national certification certificate, but each individual state issues the state license.

    Hope that helps!

  13. Career Step July 08, 2016

    Hi Amber,

You should get your results in two business days!

  14. Alex August 21, 2016

What if I fail 3x on final exam! What will happen? Do I pay for the whole cost? Im having troubles with the calculations and im so nervous!!

  15. Career Step August 24, 2016

    Hi Alex,
If you are not able to pass the final exam after 3 attempts, you will be considered a completion student and will still be able to request official transcripts of your training.  If you are a MyCAA student (your question about paying for the program leads me to believe you are), you would need to contact your MyCAA advisor for the answer to that.  Repetition is the key to learning pharmaceutical calculations, and you’re more than welcome to contact your instructor for any additional help at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

    Best wishes!

  16. Paige Counce December 19, 2016

If I fail the final exam 3x, will I receive a certificate of completion and will my certificate be mail to me or how will I receive it?

  17. Career Step January 11, 2017

    Hi Paige,
Thank you for your question. We do not provide certificates of completion, but a you may request a copy of your transcript which will be emailed to you.

    Hope this helps!
